Can you tell me about the program?

The Bachelor of Social Work Program at Hunter College is comprised of 39 credits of foundation courses plus electives. Coursework includes Social Work Practice & Learning Labs, Human Behavior and the Social Environment, Social Work Research, Social Work Practice in Care Coordination or Child Welfare, Integrative Seminar, Field Practicums, and 6 electives. Course electives can be taken in Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, and Urban Planning. Other courses relevant to social work will be considered as well.

The program is a professional degree program which prepares students for beginning, entry level professional practice in the areas of child welfare and care coordination. The Program provides educational experiences, volunteer opportunities, and internships designed to assure the graduation of a workforce ready student ready to engage in social work on micro, mezzo, and macro levels.


What are the admissions requirements?

Hunter College’s BSW Program seeks applicants who have a minimum 2.75 grade point average and volunteer/internship/work history in a social service/helping profession setting. Graduates of the Human Services Program from the Borough of Manhattan Community College can take advantage of the articulation agreement with Hunter College for the purposes of admission. All students applying from a community college must first apply and be accepted to Hunter College before applying to the BSW Program.


How long is the program?

  • Full-Time Program: Two Years (four semesters)


What are the requirements for field placement?

  • Full-Time Programs: The field component begins with the Introduction to Social Work Course where students must complete a Gateway Volunteer Assignment which is a minimum of 32 volunteer hours in a social service agency setting.
  • Junior Year- A required volunteer field assignment. 200 hours for the academic year, completed one day per week, totaling 7 hours.
  • Senior Year- A supervised field placement. 400 hours for the academic year, completed two days per week, totaling 14 hours.


Can a student choose his or her own field placement?

No. The junior year assignment and senior field work assignment will be based on the student’s population interest—Child Welfare or Care Coordination. Placement is chosen by the Field Education Office. Students may have an opportunity to express their interest in particular settings.


When do classes begin?

Classes begins in the fall semester.
